Meet the Simple Steward

content ballAs an active volunteer in Compass Catholic Ministries at our parish in Mesa, AZ, I am called to be involved on many levels. We host a seminar at the beginning of the year, followed by Spring and Fall nine-week Bible study sessions as well as one-on-one coaching assistance for anyone who feels they need more in-depth personal help.

Over the course of the last (almost) five years since my husband and I participated in our first Bible study, the question frequently comes up, “What do I cut when there’s nothing left to cut?” This question has a lot of people scratching their heads, but instead of taking a deeper look at their personal situation, they run straight into the arms of our government agencies looking for help.

This is a problem for two reasons: 1) We are giving the government way too much credit when it comes to providing for our needs and 2) we’re turning our backs on God and the church by not seeking help from him first. It used to be that struggling families went to the Church when they needed help. But, church funds are often spread thin and time is often of the essence.

So, the next step is the government. We pay taxes so we should be entitled to some help from Big Brother once in a while, right? However, more often than not, we are inclined to skip the Church’s resources altogether. Maybe our pride gets in the way and we prefer the anonymity of going through a government agency rather than having a face-to-face talk with our Pastor about our circumstances. Whatever the reasons are, this mind-set needs to change. I would argue that before we even get to the point of feeling like we need assistance from anywhere, we need to re-evaluate things on the home front.

In an effort to get us thinking differently and putting our finances back in God’s hands, I will be writing a series of posts on a newly created blog for our ministry called “SimpleStewardship”. Through these posts, it is my hope and prayer that we can turn our hearts, minds, and finances back to God and be reminded of our constant dependence on him. Enjoy and God Bless!
