One of the very first things we discuss during our nine-week Bible study (Navigating Your Finances God’s Way) is that God cares about how we handle our finances. Most people are astounded when they find out that there are over 2,500 verses which address God’s way of handling money and possession. That’s more verses than there are on both faith and prayer combined!
Here are the 3 Most Important Things the Bible Tells Us About Money.
(1) It Affects Our Relationship with the Lord – You can live a spiritual life; love the Lord, go to church, pray and read the bible, but if you are not living according to God’s will with your wallet, then you are not serving the Lord. Enjoy a closer relationship with Christ by handling your money according to the scriptures. In the Bible, Jesus relates our money with the quality of our spiritual life.
“If, then, you have not been faithful in handling worldly wealth, how can you be trusted with true wealth?” – Luke 16:11
(2) Money Competes with God – What has first place in your life? God or Money and Possessions? In our materialistic society where ‘stuff’ is so important, money and possessions often compete for first place with Christ. Our 9-week Bible Study will show you that you are only able to serve one master and it should be the Lord our God.
“You cannot be a slave of two masters; you will hate one and love the other; you will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” – Matthew 6:24
With advertising companies building the dream of material possessions, many people fall victim to the urges of purchasing and spending to find the fulfillment that can only be found in God. Seek him above all else.
(3) Be A Good Steward – God wants us to be smart about our money; just as he wants us to be conscious about how we treat people and how we live our lives like Christ. Giving, saving, spending and making money according to God’s plan is part of our responsibility as a steward. When you are face-to-face with him on your last day, don’t you want to hear the following?
“His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’” Matthew 25:23
