Throughout history, there have been documented accounts of brave men and women answering God’s call to serve him. One particularly powerful story can be found in John 1: 29-34, documenting the moment when Jesus was revealed to John the Baptist:
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! He is the one of whom I said, A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.”
John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the holy Spirit.’Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”
Take a moment to consider how incredible this is: John did not know who Jesus was until God spoke to him; and without any skepticism or doubt, John followed God’s call and immediately fulfilled his unique purpose.
In much the same way, God calls us each of us to follow him. Though the task will never be as grand as baptizing the Son of God, each of us has a unique task and purpose. We are called to spread the Word and the blessings of God himself to our families and the community around us. This witness can be seen through our lifestyles, and particularly, our financial stewardship.
It is clear from the sheer number of quotes on finances in the Bible (over 2,500!) that God has specific intentions on how we should budget and allocate our money. By planning carefully and spending prayerfully, we spread His blessings to our family and loved ones. Essentially, we testify to His goodness by planning well enough to take care of ourselves and our family while also being charitable to those less fortunate.
