Baptism of the Lord: What do We Give Him in Return? (Matthew 3:17)

This year, the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord falls on January 12.  It is on this day that we commemorate Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River by John the Baptist, and the subsequent ability for our own baptisms to free us from sin.

Though Christ was born without original sin, he presented himself for Baptism to guide us to do the same.  Jesus took the first steps that highlighted our path to salvation. Through his actions, he gave us the gift of cleansing, and thus we thank him for freeing us from sin and darkness, and leading us to the light.  In Matthew 3:17, God’s voice came from Heaven as Jesus was baptized, saying, “This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased.”  God revealed to all his greatest gift to the world: his only Son.

Take a moment to consider the magnitude of this gift, in addition to all of the other gifts God bestows on us each day.  It is humbling to know that he has done so much to care and provide for us.   The thought that God gave us his only Son, through whom we learn how to better love and understand our Lord and our neighbors, and sacrificed him for our own salvation is nothing short of incredible.  You may find yourself asking, “How can I even begin to give back to him?”

One of the greatest gifts we can give to God in return is living our lives in a way that is pleasing to him, including how we handle finances.  Many people misquote 1 Timothy 6:10, saying that “money is the root of all evil,” when in fact the verse says that “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”  Money is simply a tool with no inherent value – it is neither good not bad. What can be bad is our attitude about money when it takes the place of God as the most important thing in our lives. By managing our money and possessions God’s way and demonstrating responsibility for our possessions and finances, we give thanks to God and spread his blessings to those around us.

This year, celebrate the Baptism of the Lord by learning how to manage money God’s way. Free yourself from the clutch of materialism so that you may truly feel His love and caring. Learn more about our Catholic money management services, and how you can be a steward of our Lord.
