This is a phrase repeated thousands of times a day by well-wishing people. We hear it so often that it has almost lost its meaning.
As I am sitting here in my office writing this, the sun is just coming up. Truthfully? It has been up all night. It is just that I could not see it because it was brightening the day of someone else in another part of God’s world. When they sleep, I am awake. When they are awake, I sleep.
The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky proclaims its builder’s craft.
One day to the next conveys that message; one night to the next imparts that knowledge. There is no word or sound; no voice is heard; yet their report goes forth through all the earth, their message, to the ends of the world. God has pitched there a tent for the sun; it comes forth like a bridegroom from his chamber, and like an athlete joyfully runs its course. From one end of the heavens it comes forth; its course runs through to the other; nothing escapes its heat. Psalm 19:1-7
The heavens declare the “glory” of God. The glory of God is his presence in our lives. God is like the sun. He created it to remind us of his presence each and every day. And, the Psalmist tells us, “The sky proclaims its builder’s craft.” It reminds us that God is the Creator, and we are the created. God has crafted this day especially for you. Yes, billions of other people will enjoy the same day of sun, but think of today as a gift from God to you.
As the Psalmist tells us, each day is telling us of the glory of God. We do not always see the sun because sometimes it is behind clouds, or shining on another part of our world. But we are assured it will come back soon. We can be just as confident that if circumstances of our lives cloud our vision of God, he is still there, loving us, guiding us, and crafting us into his image.
As you go about your work today, thank God for the sun (whether you see it or not); Thank God for His Son (Whether you feel his presence or not).
God, my Father, thank you for giving me this day you have planned for me. Jesus, as my friend, forgive my mistakes and lead me this day for you are “The Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Show me the way you want me to live today. Lead me into truth in each situation I face this day, and each day now and for all Eternity. Thank you for being in my life.
Remember, the heavens are proclaiming the presence of God – the presence of God in your life. When someone tells you to have a good day, confidently reply “Amen!”
