Compound interest

Compound interest is interest paid on previously calculated interest added to the principal. For loans, compound interest is calculated on the total amount owed, including interest that has accumulated. Borrowers experience negative amortization when the principal amount of the loan actually increases because the monthly payments are lower than the full amount of interest owed. For savings, compound interest is calculated on the principal and interest paid previously that had been added to the principal balance.
